The insignia of Gangseo-gu was created in 1995 to express the bright future of Gangseo in the 21st century as it evolves into the new hub of Seoul, Korea’s capital city. The “green” at the bottom of the insignia represents the rich green spaces and pleasant atmosphere of Gangseo, the “blue” in the middle represents the Korean initials of Gangseo, and the “red” at the top stands for the bright future of Gangseo-gu, Seoul’s new hub of the 21st century.

Ginkgo trees are considered to have a long lifespan because they are not only beautiful but also resistant to urban pollution and pests. The characteristics of trees giving a sense of beauty and freshness, and growing into large trees symbolize the infinite development of Gangseo.

In Korean legend or folk tales, magpies represent good news. This bird represents harmony between the people of Gangseo, as the bird lays a symbolic bridge of love and understanding between residents.
